About Doctor

Dr Jigar Shrimali is MD DM Nephrology (Gold Medallist) FRCP (London) working as senior consultant nephrologist and kidney transplant physician with extensive experience in kidney disease, dialysis, critical-care nephrology and transplantation. He is the Founder and Director of Renus Kidney Hospital, Ahmedabad and Nadiad, providing clinical and quality-governance oversight to a growing network of dialysis centres across Gujarat. He currently serves as Joint Secretary of the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT), 2025–2027, and Treasurer of the Indian Society of Nephrology – West Zone, 2026–2028.

Education and Specialist Training
MBBS from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad; MD (General Medicine) from N.H.L. Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad; and DM (Nephrology) from the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre – Institute of Transplantation Sciences (IKDRC-ITS), Ahmedabad, where he secured first rank and the Gold Medal in Nephrology. His training gave him extensive exposure to advanced nephrology, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, critical-care nephrology, interventional procedures, transplant immunology and both living- and deceased-donor transplantation. He was subsequently elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London (FRCP).

Clinical Career and Kidney Transplantation
Transplantation is a central pillar of Dr. Shrimali's practice. During specialist training at IKDRC he participated in approximately 1,200 kidney transplant procedures, and has since been involved in more than 450 transplants through Renus and associated hospitals in Ahmedabad. His experience spans living-donor, deceased-donor, ABO-incompatible, kidney-paired, re-transplantation and other complex or high-risk procedures. He was involved in the first deceased-donor dual kidney transplantation performed in a private hospital in Gujarat, and is particularly recognised for managing immunologically complex recipients through careful selection, individualised immunosuppression and long-term graft preservation.

Nephrology and Dialysis Expertise
His practice covers chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, glomerular, diabetic and hypertensive kidney disease, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, critical-care nephrology, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and pre- and post-transplant care. He is experienced in renal and transplant biopsies, percutaneous CAPD and tunnelled dialysis catheter insertion, temporary dialysis access and ultrasound-guided procedures, and managed a dedicated nephrology ICU providing haemodialysis, CRRT and SLED.

Founder of Renus Kidney Hospital
Dr. Shrimali founded Renus Kidney Hospital as an integrated, patient-centred kidney-care system offering specialist consultation, dialysis, transplantation, interventional nephrology and critical care under one framework. It expanded to Nadiad and an extended dialysis network across Gujarat, with a consistent focus on quality, safety, standardisation and nephrologist-led governance. Renus Kidney Hospital, Ahmedabad, received NABH accreditation in July 2025.

Leadership in Nephrology and Transplantation

Elected an ISOT Executive Council Member in 2021 and re-elected in 2023, he served four continuous years before becoming Joint Secretary. He was a Council Member of ISN – West Zone (2021–2026) before assuming the Treasurer role for 2026–2028. Within ISOT he has led:

  • ISOT CPC Webinar Series
  • Critical Care in Transplantation programmes
  • ISOT Transplant Infectious Disease Fellowship
  • ISOT Clinical Transplant Immunology Fellowship
  • ISOT Mentor–Mentee Programme

  • Conference and Academic Leadership
He was Organising Secretary of the Mid-Term ISOT Conference 2023 (Gandhinagar) and the 34th Annual ISOT Conference 2024 (Ahmedabad) — one of the largest organ-transplant meetings held in India, with more than 1,700 delegates and several hundred national and international faculty. He has also contributed to the ABO-Incompatible Transplant Conclave and numerous dialysis, critical-care and CME programmes.

    Dialysis Education and GLOM INDIA
Dr. Shrimali has conducted more than 40 dialysis therapy workshops and educational programmes across India, training technicians, nurses and physicians. He founded GLOM INDIA, a platform for professional education, dialysis-technician training, kidney-disease awareness and quality improvement, reflecting his conviction that high-quality dialysis depends on nephrologists, trained technicians, nurses, administrators and informed patients working together.

    Teaching and Mentorship
He has been associated with postgraduate education at GMERS Medical College, Gandhinagar, and C.U. Shah Medical College, Surendranagar, mentoring young doctors in clinical nephrology, dialysis, transplantation, research and academic writing — extended nationally through the ISOT Mentor–Mentee and transplant fellowship programmes.

    Author, Editor and Academic Contributor
He authored the Textbook of Dialysis Therapy, a practical resource used as a reference by several institutes, and is Editor of the Clinical Textbook of Kidney Transplant Immunology and a Contributor to the Interventional Nephrology Training Manual.

    Research and Publications
Dr. Shrimali has contributed to more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in indexed national and international journals, spanning transplantation, kidney-paired and deceased-donor donation, transplant immunology, induction therapy, dialysis access and infections, dialysis outcomes, nutrition and quality of life. His work appears in journals including The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia, Transplantation, World Journal of Transplantation, Indian Journal of Nephrology, Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine, Renal Failure and International Urology and Nephrology, and he has contributed to ISOT consensus statements on induction therapy and on the utilisation of organs from brain-dead donors.
He is Principal Investigator of a multicentre prospective study of protein–energy wasting and quality of life in CKD-5D patients on maintenance haemodialysis, for which he received the K.V. George Kottukulam Memorial TANKER Foundation Young Investigator Award in 2026.

    The #SHUDDH National Dialysis Initiative
Dr. Shrimali is Lead Investigator of the #SHUDDH Initiative — Sustainable, High-quality, Unified Dialysis, Data and Hygiene - a national, evidence-informed policy framework to improve dialysis quality, safety, sustainability and governance through a structured Delphi consensus. Bringing together government, academia, private healthcare, dialysis providers, professional societies and policy groups, it addresses patient safety, dialysis quality standards, nephrologist-led governance, technician training and certification, water conservation, biomedical-waste reduction, digital quality monitoring and sustainable reimbursement. Its intended outcome is a practical framework to inform discussions with the National Health Authority, MoHFW, DGHS, PM-JAY and other institutions.
